InhuMAINE: Bearing Witness, Inspiring Change

A feature-length documentary on homelessness, resilience, and systemic inequities in Maine.

About the Film

InhuMAINE is a 78-minute documentary filmed over 19 months in Bangor, Maine, at the intersection of homelessness, addiction, mental illness, and systemic neglect. Through unfiltered storytelling, the film bears witness to lives too often dismissed or unseen, illuminating both the depth of the crisis and the resilience of those who endure it.

What began as a response to a local crisis has evolved into a broader call-to-action challenging stigma, sparking dialogue, and reimagining what it means to build a community where every person has dignity, shelter, and a sense of belonging. World Premier at the 28th Maine International Film Festival (MIFF), award nominee, Featured at the New England Film Festival, and Presented at the Maine Mental Health Counselors Association Convention (MEMHCA).

Mission & Vision

Mission: InhuMAINE seeks to Disrupt the Narrative by humanizing homelessness, dismantling stigma, and amplifying voices that too often go unheard. By sharing stories rooted in lived experience, we aim to inspire compassion, foster dialogue, and advocate for systemic change.

Vision: We imagine a Maine where homelessness is not criminalized, where systemic inequities are confronted with courage, and where healing, justice, and hope are the norm, not the exception.

What InhuMAINE Uncovers

InhuMAINE pulls back the curtain on the hidden realities shaping life on the margins. Through unflinching storytelling and lived experience, the film exposes the interconnected crises that define homelessness in Bangor, Maine—and across the nation.

  • The criminalization of poverty and homelessness, where survival is often punished instead of supported
  • Mental health and addiction struggles compounded by a lack of accessible, compassionate treatment
  • HIV and healthcare inequity that leave vulnerable populations without consistent care
  • A severe shortage of shelter and affordable housing, pushing people further into instability
  • The psychological toll and survival strategies required to endure life without safety or belonging
  • Deep systemic failures within Maine’s social safety net that perpetuate cycles of neglect

Watch the film and bear witness to the resilience, pain, and humanity too often left unseen.
