BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – The homeless encampment along the railroad tracks behind Penobscot Plaza in Bangor has been completely cleared out as of Monday.

CSX, the company that owns the property that part of the encampment sat on, indicated earlier this month cleanup would happen Monday.

According to a Bangor city official, most if not all of the people who were staying there left over the weekend.

Public conversations about homelessness often assume that every unhoused person is trapped, desperate or waiting to be “rescued.” While many people absolutely do need housing and support, that picture does not tell the whole story.

Like the quote, “If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change,” from rigid systems.

Bangor homeless encampment remains following Dec. 19 deadline

Charles Badger, who has been homeless for more than a year, on Friday said he doesn’t know where to go after he leaves the encampment along the railroad tracks but that he will spend Friday night at the Together Place. “The city did give us almost a month to move, but at the same time, we have no place to go,” Badger said.

The Bangor Housing Authority is closing its public housing waitlist because the list has gotten so long that it may take years for some families to get into housing.

Overall, it is suggested that individuals reach out to their local Hub Coordinator to get location-specific information.
